DAUFUSKIE ISLAND

daufuskieLast weekend we headed down south for a relaxing weekend with my dad. We stayed on Daufuskie Island which is located between Savannah and Hilton Head Island, and has no bridges connecting it to the main land. The island is only accessible by boat and a ferry runs twice daily. My dad has a boat and we loaded it up with our weekend supplies and hit the water early Friday morning.

I’ve had drinks at the Freeport Marina, but this time we stayed the weekend in one of the colorful little cabins, and rented golf carts for island exploring. The island is fairly small with 4 restaurants, a few beaches, and two resort areas with golf courses. There’s not a ton to do, but there is a lot of cool history dating back to Pre Revolutionary War times, and its nice to just relax.

Saturday we rode out to turners creek to pick up my brother and his family for the day. We then hit the beach where shells are plentiful and spent the day scavenging , swimming and relaxing. Later we had baskets of fried shrimp and checked out the artifacts on display at the Old Daufuskie Crab Company.

Whenever I’m with my niece I try to bring along some sort of artsy project. This time we played with sun prints, using our found beach treasures.

I’m dying to get a group together and rent out a few of  the cabins at
the marina.

Hopefully we will be back before summers over for more strolls under mossy old oaks!
